Stronger & lighter
Saltus™ planks are stronger than wooden planks, and therefore one does not need to use an equivalent size Saltus™ plank to replace a wooden plank for a given application. Saltus™ pallets are much lighter than wooden pallets which makes transport, handling and installation much more cost effective than wooden pallets.
Saltus™ pallets are impact resistant due to fiberglass outer layer. The corners are rounded during a drop test from 1.8m height with no mechanical degradation of fasteners
Composition: 50% recyclable plastic, 35% fibreglass and 15% resin.
Non-flammable due to formulation of resin.
Pneumatic nail gun OR pop riveting with flaired rivet.
Health & Environment
Respirability of fibers
Fibers produced from sawing of Saltus planks have been deemed non-respirable due to their large diameter and long lengths.
This means that the fibers don’t pose a health risk in terms of impacting the lungs of an individual who has been exposed over an extended period of time. (See scanning electron microscopy results below)
Fibre Respirability: A respirable man made mineral fibre is usually defined as a fibre with an aspect ratio greater than 3:1, longer than 5μm, with a diameter less than 3μm. Because of their large diameter, which is greater than 3μm, the fibres
would not be considered to be respirable. See below.
End of life considerations for SaltusTM pallets and crates
Saltus™ composite planks can be recycled and used in other applications after its service life of 60 years:
- Plastic foam core: can be recycled via standard plastic recycle process. This is a closed loop cycle and no plastic is
- Chopped fibre filler for geopolymer or concrete: Each Saltus™ composite plank has a fiberglass outer layer for
strength and UV protection. This layer can be chopped into short fibres to be mixed as binding agent in
geopolymer or concrete. It has been proven that geopolymer and concrete can be strengthened using up to 40% (by volume) chopped fibre.
- Chopped fibre filler for green plastic wood strengthening: Each Saltus™ composite plank has a fiberglass outer
layer for strength and UV protection. This layer can be chopped into short fibres to be mixed as binding agent in
green plastic wood products. It has been proven that green plastic wood products can be strengthened using up to 50% (by volume) chopped fibre.
